Bills Sponsored and Passed Into Law

Mental Health and the Criminal Justice System: Passed the most comprehensive legislation concerning mental health and our criminal justice system in 45 years: codified mental health courts; created Forensic Hospital Diversion Pilot Program for Dade, Duval and Broward counties; authorizes county court diversion; expands help to veterans for mental health; provides and expands post-adjudicatory and pretrial intervention programs among others.

Determined, revised, or prevented from hearing every bill referenced to Judiciary Committee in 2015 through 2016.

Civics Education Bill to require civic education be taught in schools and measure results (Sandra Day O’Conner Civics Education Act)

Creation of new chapter of limited liability companies

Automatic Renewal of Service Contracts: Requires certain notice to consumers on service contracts and establishes disclosure requirements.

Fine Arts Bill: Requires the State Education Department to measure availability and arts instruction and to publish same online

Protection of Volunteers: Allows volunteers to be employed by the volunteer agency and not usual employer for purposes of volunteering (liability)

Elimination of hidden fees (sometimes known as transfer fees) in real estate transactions

Not-for-Profit Corporation chapter revised, modernized and updated

Prohibited practice of hiring convicted violent felons in child-care facilities

Elimination of barriers for foster kids obtaining waiver of tuition.

Tightening provisions for certain controlled drugs involving pain management) part of “pill-mill” legislation

Creation of public records exception regarding reenactment on insurance data exchange involving certain child support information

Allowance of driver’s license cards to show a symbol denoting veteran status for purposes of obtaining various veteran discount benefits

Resolution urging SJRWMD et al. not to drain water from St. Johns River to give to Central Florida (delegation)

Repeal of residency of Clerk of Circuit Court (repeals 1871 law that clerks or deputy clerks live within 2 miles of county seat)
